Bush Bite #11 - 24 Sep 2004
Be a patriot or else
President Bush has had a problem with the first amendment for some time. On the 2000 campaign trail, he was angered when he learned that someone had acquired the domain name "georgewbush.com" and made it into a satirical anti-Bush site. "There ought to be some limits to freedom," George said.
Remember, according to Bush, the terrorists hate us because they HATE FREEDOM.
When Bill Mayer commented that it took guts to fly an airliner into the World Trade Center but firing cruise missiles at targets 2,000 miles away is cowardly, White House spokesperson Ari Fleischer said in response, "All Americans, need to watch what they say, watch what they do."
The White house, to compound censorship with censorship, removed Fleischer's comments from the official transcript, then later excused that by claiming a transcription error.
Yet it's been clear that the White House has been watching closely what Americans say.
With pressure from the right wing, Bill Mayer's show Politically Incorrect was terminated for being exactly what it claimed.
