Preserving the Constitution: Bush style

Bush's attempt to amend the US Constitution to eliminate the freedom of marriage for non-heterosexuals is only his latest attempt to rewrite the document on which our nation is founded.

Bush has supported efforts to add the following amendments to the Constitution:

- Prohibition of flag burning, which (besides being the traditional way to dispose of an old and ratty flag)the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld as an expression of free speech.

- Requirement for Congress to balance the budget, a pre-9/11 demand that has been swept away in the administration's wild spending spree.

- Prohibition on abortions, of course.

- Enumeration of "victims' rights" so prosecutors can have more tools to use against violent criminals.

- Ban on same-sex marriage.

None of these attempts have gained any momentum, but it is curious to see how the man who is sworn to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" wants to change it.
